    Pre-load!

My most successful pre-loading was on off license vodka and supermarket own brand Irn Bru

More seriously, develop a thick skin about buying supermarket value products. There will always be rich kids who think nothing of buying £3.50 pink Himalayan sea salt in a tiny grinder instead of spending 45p on a massive tub of table salt. Buy value stuff, especially pasta, tinned tomatoes, beans etc. and don't try and compete with the people for whom money isn't really a concern.

That being overly confident though gets people jobs, it also irritates people and this is not a good idea- especially if it's fake confidence as people see straight through it!

That if you get offered a dozen job links after a show, don't see it as a line-up to go through, look for the most interesting role on offer because you can't go back to the offer when you've finished with job number 1.

That it's worthwhile walking than getting the train after peak time in the morning. Even if it means your walking for a while. It's not just cheaper, it's also less stressful and means more work can be done.

That if anyone takes a picture of your work; ask for the negatives/a copy so you can reproduce another one once you've realised you've damaged the original after an after-show party. Not everyone keeps these negatives and some wont even know what they did with the negatives if you leave it too long.
(This was back in the day of developing pictures rather than uploading them)

That the Pound Shop is wasted-economy when it comes to things like brown tape and even some (watered down) cleaning products. Some are great, some are terrible, keep a note, share the info with friends at college, you'll soon have a decent idea on what to go for and what to avoid.

That even if you're trying to be frugal or don't feel like going anywhere after a 12+ hour studio/manual stint; go out with your mates as much as possible. Once you've graduated these people/friends will soon become business links and if you want to keep in contact, form more than a college/uni-studio friendship.

Always, always wear old clothes to dye or print. No matter how hard you try there will always be accidents, if not by your hand then by someone elses.

our best tip is take photos of your accommodation before you move in as unscrupulous landlords will try any tricks not to pay back your deposit (uni accommodation may not be so bad) any faults etc mention in writing to landlord/agent and keep a copy and photograph. one landlord tried not to pay my daughter's deposit back due to the flat being dirty but after two days cleaning it was ten times cleaner than when she arrived! They sited a sock under the bed as evidence and a broken knob on the oven which was broken and noted by her when she moved in!!! so get those photos! and when you leave do the same takes mins but may save hundreds!!
  • My tip is not to bother spending loads of money of textbooks. I have done a normal degree plus my PGCE and didn't buy any. I used the uni library to borrow books, and also used their ebooks. I also used journal articles for my essays, available for free from the uni library.

Although it is a VERY long time ago, my local library lent me books on long term loan (3 months at a time) so I saved a fortune on books I would only need for one course and never again. Don't know if this still works, worth an ask? No competition for copies like there might be with uni library.
Other tip, keep an account book. Write everything down. Boring but effective, you can see what's happening with your money. No nasty surprises plus you get keen on saving and then there's enough left for a party!

HAVE FUN! Spend time with your flat and course mates.

You'll be surprised on how little money you can survive on. One of my flat mates bought an x box the first day we got our loan in the first year... ended up eating rice and cheese towards the end of term. Even though we had fun on the x box he did admit that he'd rather be eating something else.

I agree with the above - don't bother buying the text books. Or most courses the older editions are suitable and a lot cheaper!

2nd hand rocks - the amount of board/x box! games you can get from charity shops are great.

    1) Make sure you opt for good uni accommodation if you have a choice. When I moved in luckily my dorm had internet, but not all dorms have the same privilege. Also, some dorms were notorious for partying and fire alarms at 3am! Try not to go for those dorms if you plan on being studious!

    2) You can get more than one student bank account to grab all those freebies! I was pretty stupid thinking I could only get one for the freebies as it said your student loan had to go in there, but now I realise you can just internally transfer the money each time. Also check the small print. My bank at the time didn't pay me the incentive "because I didn't move my money within 3 months of opening the account"

    3) I agree with trying to buy 2nd hand textbooks or even buying them 1 week before the exams and returning them....I have lots of books that I don't or rarely used on my shelf now, and should really get rid of them but too lazy to do so.

    4) Make sure you get your student card. Boy do I miss student discounts, all those McD free hamburgers/ice creams!

    5) You can also blag cheap theatre seats if you're a student and turn up just before a show on the day!

When you get given the overdraft on your student account, remember it's not your money! Better than blowing it all (something I recently had to lecture my little sister on...) put it in an ISA and earn interest on it. If it's in a savings account and earning you something, even just a tiny amount, it'll feel less like money that's just sitting there waiting to be spent, and you'll be more incentivised to save money day-to-day.

The other piece of advice I'd give is that anything you put in the kitchen or communal bathroom will be used up, stolen, broken or otherwise ruined. So save yourself buying a whole new set of pans and shower gel and save money replacing missing food by keeping it all in your room. A mini fridge will pay for itself over the course of a term.

Don't start a sexual relationship before there is a friendship or at least a good rapport

    Don't push - attraction becomes apparent .

Learn to let go if that's what either of you want .

    Talk - don't imagine !

    1. Not everybody will like you.

    2. Don't accept drinks from rich kids.

    3. Girls want sex all the time too.
